Clinical Comparison
MRI vs Other Imaging Methods
| Factor | MRI | CT Scan | X-ray |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiation exposure | No radiation. Uses magnetic fields | Uses moderate radiation depending on body area | Uses low radiation |
| Soft tissue detail | Best for brain, nerves, muscles, ligaments, and organs | Good detail but less than MRI | Cannot show soft tissues clearly |
| Bone and fractures | Good for stress fractures and bone marrow | Best for detecting fractures and trauma | Good for obvious fractures |
| Brain and spine | Most detailed and preferred method | Used in emergencies like head injury | Not useful |
| Ligaments and cartilage | Clearly visible | Not visible | Not visible |
| Abdominal organs | Detailed imaging without radiation | Fast and widely used | Limited information |
| Pregnancy safety | Generally safe after first trimester without contrast, only if advised by doctor | Usually avoided unless necessary | Used cautiously with shielding |
| Heart imaging | Used for detailed functional assessment in specific cases | Common for coronary artery imaging | Only shows basic heart size |
| Scan time | Around 20 to 60 minutes | Usually 5 to 15 minutes | Few minutes |
| Cost range in Dubai | Starts around AED 999 depending on area | Around AED 700 to 1500 | Around AED 150 to 400 |
| Best use cases | Brain, spine, joints, soft tissues, and organs without radiation | Emergency conditions, trauma, lung and bone evaluation | Initial screening for fractures and chest conditions |
Patient Preparation
How to Prepare for Your MRI Scan
Standard Adult
Wear comfortable clothing without metal such as zips or buttons
Remove jewellery, watches, and any metal items before the scan
Continue your regular food and medicines unless advised otherwise
Inform the team if you have implants, clips, or previous surgeries
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early for safety screening
Pregnant Patients
MRI is generally safe after the first trimester if medically required
Avoid contrast unless specifically advised by your doctor
Inform the team about your pregnancy before booking
No fasting is usually required unless instructed
The scan is only done when clearly needed for diagnosis

Continue your regular medication unless told otherwise
If fasting is required, discuss timing of insulin or tablets with your doctor
Carry a light snack for after the scan if fasting was needed
Inform staff about your diabetes before the scan
Monitor your blood sugar if you feel unwell

MRI with Contrast (If Required)
A contrast injection may be used to improve visibility of certain conditions such as tumours, inflammation, or blood vessels. It is generally safe but requires a few precautions.
Fast for about 4 hours if the scan involves abdomen or pelvis
Inform the team if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis
Share any past history of contrast reactions or allergies
A recent kidney function test may be required in some patients

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our MRI screening services.
Yes, MRI is generally considered safe for annual preventive screening because it uses magnetic fields instead of radiation for detailed internal body imaging.
CT scans use radiation for faster imaging, while MRI uses magnetic technology for clearer soft tissue, brain, spine, ligament, and organ evaluation.
People with certain implanted medical devices, metal fragments, or incompatible pacemakers should inform radiologists before MRI screening for proper safety assessment.
Contrast is not always required because many MRI scans provide clear imaging without contrast, depending on the organs, symptoms, and screening purpose involved.
Yes, tourists can usually book MRI scans with passport identification and previous medical reports if available. MVR provides convenient MRI appointment support for visitors requiring diagnostic evaluation.
Yes, MVR provides same day MRI appointments based on scan type, scheduling availability, and radiologist coordination for faster diagnostic imaging and preventive health screening support.
MRI screening may cover the brain, spine, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, pelvis, prostate, uterus, blood vessels, joints, and other internal structures. MVR provides 8 body part and 12 body part MRI screening packages for comprehensive preventive health evaluation.
A knee MRI cost depends on the scan type, contrast requirement, facility, and reporting expertise. Basic scans are generally more affordable, while advanced MRI evaluations may cost higher based on diagnostic requirements.
Spinal cord MRI pricing varies depending on the body region, contrast usage, scan complexity, and imaging technology. Cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine scans may have different costs based on clinical evaluation needs.
Pregnant women may undergo MRI scans when medically necessary, especially after doctor evaluation. MRI does not use radiation, but contrast materials are usually avoided unless specifically recommended by specialists.
CT scans use radiation to capture fast images of bones and injuries, while MRI uses magnetic fields to produce detailed images of soft tissues, nerves, joints, organs, and the brain.
MRI scans are generally safe for most people. Some patients may experience mild discomfort from noise, enclosed spaces, or contrast injection, while serious side effects are considered uncommon in routine imaging.
Most MRI scans take around 20 to 60 minutes depending on the body part, scan complexity, and whether contrast imaging is required. Patients usually need to remain still during scanning.
Fasting requirements depend on the type of MRI and contrast usage. Many routine MRI scans do not require fasting, but patients may receive specific preparation instructions before their appointment.

My wife is currently 28 weeks pregnant, and we visited this diagnostic centre for a growth scan. Shockingly, the report they generated mentioned a 32-week scan, which is completely incorrect. Almost every parameter in the report did not match the actual stage of pregnancy.
Concerned about the accuracy, we immediately went to another clinic and repeated the scan. The second report was completely different, which clearly shows how unreliable the first report was.
What was even more alarming was that the person operating the ultrasound machine appeared inexperienced and was asking other nurses how to operate the machine during the scan. This is extremely unprofessional, especially when dealing with something as sensitive as a pregnancy scan.
Providing such incorrect reports can cause unnecessary stress and panic for expecting parents.
I would strongly not recommend this diagnostic centre to anyone.

A brief note about my wife’s recent growth scan:
- MVR Diagnostic was the best facility we visited for the scan.
- Staff were friendly and provided helpful support
between appointments.

reminders made scheduling easy.
